We often hold on to trauma and let it define who we are. An important part of healing is to release all of

the traumatic events that have happened to you, acknowledge their impact and forgive and release the bitterness so you can do your healing work.  This has to be a conscious choice.  In this portrait, the subject is releasing a fragile bird she has been holding on.  The bird is a metaphor for trauma. Trauma often makes us fragile and we go into self protection to protect the fragile part of ourselves, pushing people away, becoming bitter, acting out, all to protect that broken part of us. But we can fly. Often surviving and transcending trauma makes us stronger but you can only transcend trauma if you let it go.
